About the Course

This course is accessible to trained healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, dentists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists. A minimum pre-intermediate level of English proficiency is required to enroll. Should a student not meet this criterion, participation in an ICD foundation course in English is advised.

OET Curriculum

1. Listening

• Approx. 45 minutes.
• The same content for all healthcare professions.
• Understanding a variety of health-related spoken content, such as patient consultations and lectures.

2. Reading

• 60 minutes.
• The same content for all healthcare professions.
• Reading and comprehending a variety of texts on health-related topics.

3. Writing

• 45 minutes.
• Specific to the profession, based on typical workplace situations.
• Writing a letter, usually a referral letter. Sometimes, a different type of letter is necessary, especially for certain professions: e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to counsel/advise or inform a patient, career or group.

4. Speaking

• Approx. 20 minutes.
• Specific to the profession, based on typical workplace situations.
• Participating in two role-plays. While you play your professional position (as a healthcare practitioner), the teacher takes on the part of a patient or customer, or in some cases, a relative or caretaker.

What You Will Learn?

• In the OET (Occupational English Test), you will learn language skills tailored specifically for healthcare professionals. 
• This includes improving your ability to communicate effectively in English within a healthcare context, such as with patients, colleagues, and supervisors. 
• You will develop skills in speaking, writing, listening, and reading, with a focus on medical terminology, language accuracy, and understanding patient needs. 
• Additionally, you will learn strategies for success in the OET exam, including how to approach each section effectively and manage your time efficiently.
